A special debate on Tibet in the European Parliament in Strasbourg

Brussels, March 10 – On the request from the EP Tibet Intergroup a special debate on the issue of Tibet was held in the European Parliament to commemorate the 46th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day on 10th March 2005 in Strasbourg.

After a brief statement from the European Commission the debate was introduced by Mr. Thomas Mann, the President of the EP Tibet Intergroup followed by statements from Mrs. Martine Roure, PSE , Mr. Janusz Onyszkiewicz, ALDE, Mrs. Eva Lichtenberger, GREENS-EFA, Mr. Jonas Sjöstedt, EUL-NGL, Mr. Marcine Libicki, UEN, Mr. Ryszard Czarnecki, NA, Mr. Raül Romeva Rueda, GREEN-EFA, and Mr. Bernd Posselt, EPP-ED respectively speaking on behalf of their political groups.

Members dealt different aspects of the Tibetan issue and were unanimous in urging the European Commission to support for a meaningful dialogue between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Chinese government in order to find a peaceful solution to the Tibetan problem. Most of the members who participated in the debate had a Tibetan national flag on their desk as a mark of solidarity to the Tibetan cause. It was also reported in the Parliament that around 2000 villages and cities in Europe are hoisting the Tibetan Flag on this day.
