Bangalore, December 2 – The Dalai Lama said on Thursday that it was in the interest of Tibet to remain in China, especially from the perspective of economic development and reiterated that he was only seeking “genuine autonomy for his country and not independence”.
Over the years, while there has been remarkable economic development in China, the government there has “neglected” Tibet in modern education, training and technology, while only giving priority on “how to control Tibet and exploit its natural resources,” the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said.
“As a result, Tibet… If we Tibetans take full responsibility (of governing Tibet)… Develop areas on our own… I think it’s difficult,” the Dalai Lama said in response to a query after his address on “Universal Brotherhood”, organised by the Rotary Club in Bangalore.
“Therefore, from our own interest… For economic development… Remaining in China, I feel, is useful, provided the Chinese government respects the ancient rich culture and spirituality of Tibet,” he added.
“So, China should adopt a realistic approach. I am for a middle-way approach (genuine autonomy for Tibet)”, he said.
Asked by reporters later if he thought Tibet would get “genuine autonomy” during his lifetime, he said “very possible”.
