Dharamsala, May 16 – A prominent Tibetan political party on has expressed concern over the region’s development.
At an annual meeting held in Dharamsala, the seat of exiled Tibetan government, the National Democratic Party of Tibet (NDPT) called for sustainable development of the Chinese-held homeland. Acharya Yeshi Phunstok, President of NDPT, said the party would push for restoration of democracy in Tibet.
“In the 10th agenda we will discuss what we have been able to do in the last four years across the globe about the Tibetan freedom movement. Then we have to discuss about the promotion of democracy in the Tibetan and education of the Tibetan society,” said Phunstok.
Phunstok said since 1950s, one common assumption among planners and economists was that Tibet’s economy has been poor. He said the recent resumption of direct contact between the representatives of Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama and China has been encouraging.
Tibetans hope that this will lead to negotiations to resolve the question of Tibet in the best interest of the two countries.
