After 50 years of a repressive foreign occupation in Tibet and worldwide Diaspora of Tibetan refugees, there are a growing number of Tibetan artists exploring new forms of expressing the truth of their being. They are reclaiming and redefining their cultural identity and asserting their right to have their own visions. The emerging work is often beautiful, universal and deeply human. It is a testament to the human spirit and the depth of Tibetan culture that one finds not only beauty, humor and poignancy in so much of the work but an undeniable element that puts some of the art in the direct line of sight of higher spiritual insights.
It is Mechak Gallery’s mission to bring the work of these artists, many working under difficult conditions, to a larger world audience and to be a catalyst in the development and support of their art.
As a first step, our internet site, www.mechakgallery.com will display a cross section of the Art and offer original and fine reproductions for sale to help support the Artists and the work of the Gallery. This will also have the immediate benefit of allowing the artists to see and connect with each others work for the first time.
Next, by developing a network of artists and knowledge of their work, Mechak Gallery will become a source point for contemporary Tibetan art and a curator service for organizers of exhibitions, cultural events and publications.
Mechak will also work towards organizing gatherings of Tibetan artists to facilitate the exchange of ideas, thoughts and experiences so that the creative streams of the individual artists can find common ground and form a river of Contemporary Tibetan Art for the new century.
Ultimately, it is the dream of Mechak Gallery to help Tibetan Artists continue making Art that moves their spirit, so that it may in turn, move the world to appreciate the depth and universal value of Tibetan culture to today’s world.
