A lone beauty takes it all – Miss Tibet 2003 declared

Dharamsala, October 1 – In a modest press meeting, Lobsang Wangyal, the Director-cum-Producer of the Lobsang Wangyal Production, today formally announced Tsering Kyi as the unopposed winner of the Miss Tibet 2003.

From the initial 10 participants from various Tibetan settlements, gradually nine of the contestants remitted back on the apprehension ranging from ailing father to unavailability of leave.

Tsering Kyi, a.k.a Chumig (spring) was born in 1983 in the Labdrang region of Amdo, northeastern Tibet. This 20 year beauty queen received her Primary and Secondary education in Tibet. In 1996, after graduating from Secondary school, she fled to India with a sole aim of pursuing further education. While in India she joined Tibetan Children Village, Suja where she had won couple of academic laurels in “Literary Competitions”. In the 2002 December, she joined the prestigious Tibetan literary and academician circle, known as “Guild of Tibetan Writers”. Subsequently, she authored her first poetry book titled “Prose of Tsering Kyi”.

She expressed her sadness in finding no other participants, yet she expressed her gratification having sacrificed and won the much coveted title.

The formal crowning will be done on the 9th October at Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts during the Free Spirit Festival, where she will be presented with a cash prize of Rs.100,000.

Miss Tibet pageant was organised for the first time in Tibetan history by Lobsang Wangyal in year 2002, this is the second in line. The aim and objectives of the pageant is to empower Tibetan women and to give them an opportunity on par with their western counterparts. Dolma Tsering, the former Miss Tibet participated in two of the International pageants held in Malaysia and Mexico. She won the Miss Goodwill subsidiary title and the Best National Costume in both the countries.

Undeterred by the single contestant, Lobsang Wangyal, the man behind the show, elucidated to the press that Miss Tibet is an annual event and that he would carry on with his work no matter, whatsoever. When asked whether there is any plan to search for Mr.Tibet, Lobsang in his usual candid manner quipped, “No, No, then how can I participate.”
