Dharamsala, September 1 – There is an urgent need to act on the issue of Tibet, which has strategic importance for India. Recent border disputes between India and China show the fragile relation between the two nations. So goes the statement issued by the Friends of Tibet which is carrying out a day’s hunger strike on the occasion of Tibetan Democracy Day (September 2). The hunger strike by Tibet supporters will be near the Mahatma Gandhi Statue, Pune Railway Station. The organisation has urged all like-minded people to support the action and to participate in the hunger strike.
The Tibetan students studying in various colleges of Pune are expected to take part in the strike. The local Indian supporters too will sit on hunger strike to show their solidarity with the Tibetans. Tibetans all over the world celebrate September 2 as their democracy day because the Tibetan Assembly was one of the first major changes that His Holiness the Dalai Lama brought about in his efforts to introduce a democratic system of administration.
An official function will be held at the Tsuglakhang ground to celebrate the day. The Supremem Justice Commissioner, the Justice Commissioners, the Kalon Tripa – led Kashag, Chairman and the members of the Assembly of Tibetan People’s Deputies’ working committee will attend the gathering tomorrow.
Addressing the gathering will be the Chairman of the ATPD, Mr. Pema Jungney and Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche, the Kalon Tripa.
