Dhondupling FC, Mundgod enters semi finals of 24th GCM Gold Cup

Bylakuppee, April 7: Dhondupling FC clement town and DYSA Mundgod became the first two teams to enter the semi final of the 24th Gyalyum Chenmo memorial Gold cup at the Tibetan Dekyi Larsoe football field here.

Dhondupling FC scored the first goal through their striker Jigme Norbu against Gulladhalla FC in the 9th minute. Gulladhalla FC star striker Kalsang Topgyal (Tapa) could not play due to a red card in the previous game. However, Gulladhala found a way back into the game through a goal from in the second half from Tenzin Namgyal.

DFC’s slender lead was now in danger as Gulladhala made attempts at good to level the game. However, DFC managed to protect their one goal lead till the end despite few wonderful attempts by Gulladhalla FC.

In the second quarter final, former champions DYSA and TDL came face to face in a match that many say was between stamina and skill. TDL looked to dominate the possession of the ball but it was DYSA who struck first in the 9th minute. A cross from Tenzin Monlam into the eight yard box was converted by Dorjee Sangpo to score the first goal.

However, TDL came back into the game through a goal from Tenzin Tsangpa. DYSA’s goal keeper Samdup could not swiftly react to a ball that hit the woodwork and came back. Tsangpa hit a first time volley past the goalkeeper to level the game. TDL midfield dominated most part of the game but failed to convert. It looked like the two teams would have to play extra time or penalty shootout but it was not to be. DYSA were awarded a free kick for a hand ball by a TDL player in stoppage time. Taking the set piece, DYSA’s Affi sent the ball into the eight yard box to find his striker Urgyen Sangpo who headed the ball past the goal keeper into the right right of the net. TDL missed a few chances to take the lead but thwarted by DYSA goalkeeper Samdup.

Gangtok FC, studded with star players including former and current national players will clash against debutant Victory FC in a game that is dubbed by many as the final game with both teams being looked at as this years likely champions. Pema Lhundup, past golden boot winner, will play along side experienced players like Tenzin Tsephel, Samphel (Sam). However, all eyes are on Gangtok FC mid-fielder Phurba who has already turned into a football celebrity, especially among monks, for his constant performances that play crucial role in winning matches. The second match will be between Toronto FC and DLIHE.
