DHARAMSHALA, July 17: The Tibetan national flag was seen for a brief period at Martyr’s street (Tib: Pawoe Sanglam) on July 12 despite heavy security in Ngaba town, known for several protests and self immolations over the years. However, no arrests have been reported so far.
According to International Campaign for Tibet, the flag displayed from a building indicate a determination to send a message of resistance despite the crackdown in the area, which is hotbed for anti government protests over the years.
The security in the area was already tight due to a traditional cultural festival happening since July 10. This was for the first time since 2008 that a concert has happened in the region.
The Chinese officials always fear of unrest when Tibetans gather in large numbers and as expected the concert also saw a heavy presence of police.
According to the ICT, at least two renowned Tibetan singers were not allowed to take part in the music concert since they have sung songs in support of Tibetan culture and the Dalai Lama in the past.
