DHARAMSHALA, Dec. 14: The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama currently on a vsit to South India said that although there is a logjam in the relations between Beijing and Tibetan counterparts, the spirit of the Tibetan people inside Tibet is strong and that youth are resilient in their resolve.
Speaking yesterday in an interview with Star of Mysore, the Tibetan leader said, “Sometimes things seem more hopeful and at other times less. Right now we have no direct contact, but the spirit of Tibetans in Tibet remains strong. Even the younger generation is remarkably resilient,” the Dalai Lama mentioned.
The Tibetan leader who devolved his power voluntarily to an elected leadership in 2011 observed that the resolution of the Tibetan issue can lead to similar prospects for other areas which are afflicted with Beijing, wherein lies China’s opportunity to improve its international image. He said, “Once the Tibetan issue has been resolved, the problems with Taiwan, Hong Kong and what the Chinese call Xinjiang will be more easily addressed and China’s international image will improve.”
The octogenarian leader also attended the University of Mysore’s 97th Convocation where he was bestowed the ‘Honorary Doctorates of Literature’. While expressing joy upon receiving a watch for gift, the Tibetan leader jested that unlike the students who had worked hard for the degrees, he has done very little to earn it.
He told the students that an inclusive education of modern learning coupled with a sense of warmth and concern towards others is the way forward for students everywhere in the world.
“For many of you who have graduated today, real life now begins. You have already proved that your brains are smart, but you will also need a warm heart and a concern for others’ well-being if you are to succeed. These qualities will bring honesty and transparency to whatever you do, which is what will also earn others’ trust and friendship, enabling you to put your education to meaningful use,” the Dalai Lama told the students of Mysore University.
