DHARAMSHALA, September 9: A Tibetan monk from Thangkor Soktsang Monastery in Dzoege County of Ngaba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture was reportedly arrested on August 24 from his monastery, according to the Radio Free Asia.
Described as inactive in political matters by the source, Gendun Drakpa, who has been working as the treasurer of the monastery, was detained by the Chinese authorities from his quarter in the presence of his roommate last month under vague charges.
“He was focused solely on the work of the monastery and was not involved in any illegal [political] activities,” said the source, adding that the monastery received a phone call soon after the arrest.
“The officials have stated that he was kept ‘under detention’ and being interrogated and questioned about the monastery’s finances and operating fund. However, nothing more has been heard about him since then,” the source said.
The source also added that his friends believe his viewing of news programs broadcast from outside Tibet through social media and messaging applications (WeChat) may have be the reason for his detention.
The 39-year old monk’s family members have been since seeking more information on his whereabouts and his current physical condition. However, they have not been able to receive any further information of him.
