DHARAMSHALA, June 1: Former Minister (Kalon) for Department of Security, Dongchung Ngodup has been appointed the new Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in New Delhi at Bureau of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

As per Kashag’s circular, the former kalon would take the charge of the office from July 15, 2016.

Speaking to media after the announcement of his appointment, Dongchung Ngodup said that it is a big responsibility. Unlike administrating a particular department, he said that it would involve working with various sections of Indian government, embassies and ambassadors. He said he sees management of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s travel a big responsibility.

“I feel that I may have to keep many things in my mind since I have less experience in the foreign affairs department. However, since I am given this responsibility, I will be fully committed in fulfilling all my duties,” he said.

He said that as of now his main plan would be to continue the works and relationships developed by the outgoing representative Kasur Tempa Tsering.

Earlier this year, he resigned as kalon on ‘moral grounds’ on April 6 after serving for almost 4 and half years in the first cabinet since His Holiness the Dalai Lama fully devolved his political power in 2011.

Ngodup has served as Minister for the Department of Security in the previous cabinet (13th Kashag Sept 2006 – Aug 2011). Before serving as a Kalon for two terms, he served as the Secretary of the security department from 1993 – 2006.
