DHARAMSHALA, May 27: Two Tibetan monks have been arrested by the Chinese authorities on unknown charges in a restive Tibetan area of Ngaba which has been a hotbed for anti government protests over the years, reported the RFA.

The current whereabouts and conditions of the two remain unknown.

Lobsang Dhargye of Ngaba Kirti monastery and another monk of Tsinang Monastery were taken into custody separately. The local police arrested Dhargye on the night of May 23.

“He was arrested once before and sentenced to a three-year prison term in 2011. After serving his three-year term, he returned to Kirti monastery to continue his studies,” the source said on condition of anonymity.

The reason for his arrest is still unclear, however the source believe that it may be due to his noncompliance of the rule, which mandates a freed prisoner to regularly report to the local police about their daily activities. “This (noncompliance) may have been the reason they detained him again,” the source added.

Meanwhile, Chinese police arrested a monk of Ngaba’s Tsinang Monastery from the same region on May 14. Jamyang Lodoe, a monk at, was taken into custody in front of the Barkham County People’s Hospital.

According to the monk’s cousin named Choephel living in Paris, the local Tibetans believe the monk was arrested ‘because of his writings and online publication of politically sensitive articles and also sharing these with other Tibetans’.

146 Tibetans have resorted to self-immolation as a form of protest against the repressive Chinese rule in Tibet since 2009.
