DHARAMSHALA, May 2016: The results of the class XII students in Tibetans schools across India was announced last week with more than 1300 students from 17 Tibetan schools appearing in the All India Secondary School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) under the Central Board of Secondary Education, the apex education governing body in India.

The result of this year statistically is surmise from the total of 1359 students who sat for the final exams before college education. The overall pass percentage of Tibetan schools is 90.07% (1224 students) with four schools securing 100% pass percentage.

The number of students securing distinction grades of 75% or above has gone down compared to last year. While in 2015, the overall percentage of students crossing the mark was 30.95%, this year only 25.16% of the students managed to pass the threshold.

The Department of Education of the Tibetan government in exile has been criticized for the presumptive representation of the particular (75% holders) mark as being the apparatus to measure success in the Tibetan education in exile.

“This is a grossly flawed and misleading graphical representation of progressive improvement of CBSE class XII result since 2010. The concerned person(s) doing the statistical analysis of the results should know that the raw increase in the number of students securing 75% & above does not mean “improvement” as long as the total number of students appearing for the exams every year is not taken into consideration. “Percentage Increase” in the number of students securing 75% & above should be calculated for a more accurate representation,” writes Jamyang Gyaltsen on Tibetan Educator’s Network, a Facebook page frequented by teachers, academicians and students.

The much touted Sikyong Scholarship award for scholars securing more than 95% has no takers this year with the closest student, Tenzin Tsomo from TCV Selakui missing out by a few points with 94.2%.

Her counterparts from Commerce and Arts stream, Tenzin Nordon and Tenzin Phuntsok scored 88% and 92.8% respectively. The top three scholars from each stream are felicitated with the Gaden Phodrang award each year.
