Monk writer sentenced to 90 months’ imprisonment

DHARAMSHALA, May 9: Chinese authorities in Ngaba prefecture have sentenced a Tibetan monk writer to seven and half years in prison, Kanyag Tsering, a monk here at Kirti monastery said.

Lobsang Jamyang, 28, whose pen name is Lomik, was arrested by police on the streets of Ngaba county town on April 17, 2015, and has been held in detention for over a year without trial or informing his family of his whereabouts. The charges on which he was tried by the court could not be ascertained.

Son of Jodor and Jamkar, of Jotsang household in village no. 3 of Me’uruma township, Lomik joined Kirti monastery at a young age, and was studying in the Prajnaparamita class.

He took part time courses in non-religious studies at Larung Gar monastery in Serta and the Northwest Minorities University in Lanzhou. He participated in many speaking events, and wrote numerous poems and regular social commentaries, including on freedom of expression for writers in Tibet. A collection of his poems had been published as “The swirling yellow mist”.
