Opera festival punctuated to mourn self immolations by two Tibetans

Mundgod, March 4: The ongoing Shoton festival of Tibetan opera which opened on March 1 was stopped for a day to pay respects to the two Tibetans who died following self immolation protest for the cause of Tibet earlier this week on Monday.

The performance of Opera troupe from Phuntsokling Tibetan settlement Orissa today was called off today as artistes from various opera troupes gathered inside the performing arena to say prayers for the departed souls.

A candle light vigil was organized in the evening for the public to pay tribute to the two Tibetans, Kalsang Wangdu, a monk of Retsokha Aryaling Monastery in Nyarong, and Dorjee Tsering, a student of Tibetan Homes Foundation Mussoorie.

Kalsang Wangdu, a monk of Retsokha Aryaling Monastery, set himself ablaze at around 4 p.m. local time near the monastery on Monday, calling for Tibet’s complete independence, according to RFA.

Dorjee Tsering, a 16 year old Tibetan, set himself ablaze around 8:30 at the Home for elderly in Doegu- Yugyalling Tibetan settlement in Herbertpur on Monday.
