DHARAMSHALA, September 9: Just a day after the arrest of a teen monk in Ngaba County following a solo protest another Tibetan monk has been arrested earlier today for a similar protest.

Jamphel Gyatso, a 21 year old monk of Kirti Monastery in Ngaba, took to the main street of Ngaba town around 12 pm (local time) today in Ngaba County, holding high a portrait of the exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama. Kanyag Tsering of Kirti Jepa Monastery in Dharamsala, India reported that Tibetans present there heard the lone monk repeatedly shout “free Tibet” and “long live Dalai Lama” while walking the main street of the town. He was shortly arrested after Chinese police arrived and arrested him. His whereabouts and conditions are not known as of now.

This is the second solo protest by a Tibetan in just two days in Ngaba, a restive region known for anti government protests by Tibetans since 2008.

His parents, Surya and Tarey Kyi, live in division 3 of Meruma Township. Jamphel Gyatso is the youngest of the two sons and a daughter of the family.

On Monday, the Chinese authorities arrested another monk of Kirti Monastery, Lobsang Kalsang, 19, following his solo protest in the main market of Ngaba holding a framed portrait of the Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama.

143 Tibetans have self immolated in protest against the Chinese rule and calling for the return of the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet since Tabey, another monk of the same monastery, set himself ablaze in 2009.
