DHARAMSHALA, June 11: Four monks of Labrang Tashikyil monastery have been detained following two separate incidents of arrests in Sangchu County, reported the Voice of Tibet radio.
Kalsang and Khyungkey Jinpa, both natives of Bora County, and Jamyang were arrested around 7PM on June 5, a Tibetan source told the VOT. The exact reason for their arrest is not known.
The three monks are believed to be held in detention in the County police station but there is no confirmed information regarding their current whereabouts.
The family members and relatives were not informed of the charges leveled against them within 24 hours of their arrest as required by the Chinese law.
Another monk of Labrang monastery, Kalsang Monlam, has also been arrested. Monlam was handcuffed and taken from his monastic quarters without citing any reasons .
With the 80th birthday of the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama around the corner and with Tibetans both in exile and those in Tibet planning various events to mark the Tibetan leader’s Ghyatoen the Chinese authorities are making sure that no public gatherings take place due to fear of protests. Several arrests have been made in various parts of Tibet in connection with the celebrations of the exiled Tibetan leader’s 80th birthday.
