DHARAMSHALA, June 8: A Tibetan youth has been in detention since his arrest in March in Golok Chigdril County in Qinghai province.

Yonten Rabgyal, 26, was arrested on March 13 this year and current whereabouts remain unknown. Yonten had told a friend that he had been summoned by the County police and that he had done nothing illegal.

Yonten belonged to a poor family from Chigdril County’s Palyul Shok Richen Richung 3. Yonten could not see his mother who passed away on May 29.

Sources say that Yonten might have been arrested on suspicion of sending information outside to exile sources.

This is Yonten’s second arrest. He had been detained before and released on payment of 5000 Yuan.
Chinese authorities in Qinghai have stepped up its surveillance mechanism in the run up to the 80th birthday of the exile Tibetan leader Dalai Lama being planned both in Tibet and exile.

Ghyatoen as it is called in Tibetan, the 80th birthday of an individual in a family or a group is traditionally celebrated with grand festivity and respect in various parts of Tibet, especially in Amdo where the Dalai Lama was born in 1935.
