DHARAMSHALA, June 4: At least ten Tibetans have been detained following a protest by Tibetans against a construction project on a disputed land in Luchu County on Tuesday, reports said.

Local Tibetans saw heavy earth mowers and other construction equipment were being brought in to construct road on land owned by Tibetans.

Armed policemen swarmed the area immediately and took away at least ten Tibetans.

A Tibetan source told the RFA that the land being disputed falls in the County’s Alak village and that the locals use it for large gatherings including performances and shows.

The same source said local government authorities had already made previous attempts to grab the land but failed due to stern objections from the Tibetans.

This is not the first case of forced acquisition of land by government authorities in Tibetan areas including nomadic communities.

At least 15 Tibetans were arrested following a protest on May 12, 2013. The government informed the Tibetans that the land had been brought under government ownership.
