DHARAMSHALA, May 11: A Tibetan father and his mentally unstable son were seriously injured after they were beaten up by two policemen in civilian clothing on May 7 in Driru County, Nagchu Prefecture, reported the Voice of Tibet.

Yarphel, a Tibetan monk of Sera Jhe monastery in South India, identified the father as Namgyal Tenzin, 53, and his son Petse who is mentally unstable. The two were on a stroll around 11PM on May 7 when they were stopped by two men.

Yarphel said though the two men were not wearing police uniforms it did not require much effort for the victims to establish their identity.

In justification of their actions, the policemen had said that the two Tibetans called them “Gyukhyi”, a Tibetan abuse meaning Chinese government’s dog. However, Namgyal Tenzin had rubbished it saying there was no need for him and his son to call names to strangers.

Namgyal has sustained a broken back, serious injuries on his head. Local Tibetans even suspect damage to his kidney after blood was spotted in his urine. He was rushed to the County hospital but had to be taken to Lhasa, capital of Tibet, for treatment. His current conditions remain unknown.

Local Tibetans argue that the authorities had not punished the two policemen and that the authorities must do justice to the father and son by bringing the two policemen to book.
