DHARAMSHALA March 18: A Tibetan monk was arrested Tuesday in Ngaba following a lone protest calling for ‘Freedom in Tibet’ and ‘long life for Dalai Lama.’
Kanyak Tsering, a Tibetan monk of Kirti monastery based here, identified the 19 year old monk as Lobsang Kalsang, 19.
Lobsang carried a portrait of the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama and threw paper prayer flags into the air as he walked along the main street. Chinese police on patrol immediately subdued him before being taken away.
It is not known where Lobsang is currently held.
Lobsang is one of the three children of Tsering and Dechen, residents of Chuglay Gapma of Cha village, Ngaba County. Lobsang had joined the Kirti Monastery in Ngaba since childhood.
Lobsang became the second monk of Kirti Monastery to carryout a solo protest this month. Gendun Phuntsok, 18, marched into the main street of Ngaba town on March 8 carrying a huge portrait of the exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama adorned with a yellow traditional scarf. He shouted, “Let the Dalai Lama return to Tibet,” as he walked. Both hailed from the same village.
