Dalai Lama speaks on Compassion at Kalindi College for Women

DHARAMSHALA, January 29: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama yesterday said that the male dominance in human society should change and encouraged all to have the self-confidence to fight injustice in society.

“Females biologically have better sensibility to others’ suffering,” said His Holiness the Dalai Lama yesterday during his talk on ‘Basic Human Nature is Compassion’ at Kalindi College for women, University of Delhi. “So, the time has come for you, younger and older sisters, to think more about how to promote human compassion!”

Addressing the girls of the women’s college regarding cosmetics, His Holiness said that girls should pay equal attention to inner cosmetics as they do with outer beauty.

Over 2000 students and staff from various colleges of University of Delhi also attended the talk.

His Holiness defined compassion as a basic feeling oriented towards fellow human beings for their suffering. “Humans create problems by discriminating on account of our differences,” said His Holiness. the Dalai Lama. “But these are secondary. At the level of our basic humanness there is no source of conflict. Basic human nature is compassion. This is logical because we were born from our mother and were nurtured by her affection and care.”

The Tibetan Nobel laureate further noted that as social animals, everyone needs love and compassion and that it is the best human qualities with which we can take care of our society. He also added that those who received maximum care and affection from their parents, friends or relatives at a younger age are happier.

The 79-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader also called on Indians to share its wisdom traditions of secular ethics, religious harmony and non-violence with others as they are very relevant to today’s world.

In the morning, His Holiness was invited for tea with the Principal and Vice-Principal of Kalindi College and Dr. Dinesh Singh, Vice-Chancellor of University of Delhi and had talks about gender equality in education.

From January 31 to February 1, His Holiness will give a public talk and a one-day Buddhist teaching based on the Dhammapada, organized by the Youth Buddhist Society (YBS) of India at Sankisa, Uttar Pradesh.

Following that, His Holiness is scheduled to travel to Switzerland and Denmark where he will give public talks and teachings
