DHARAMSHALA, January 27: A Tibetan political prisoner has been released last Saturday after completion of three years’ sentence.

Jamyang Tenzin, 41-year-old monk of Yonru Geyden Rabgayling monastery, was detained on October 2007 for resisting political re-education campaign at his monastery in Lithang, Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan province.

He even shouted slogans calling for the long life of the Dalai Lama before getting arrested by the Public Security Bureau officials.

After being detained more than 21 months, the Kardze County Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Jamyang for defying the government’s “Patriotic Education” in 2009.

In October 2010, Jamyang was released from prison in poor health condition due to severe torture injuries sustained in prison. However, He was re-arrested and sentenced to three years in prison.

A massive “patriotic education” campaign was launched in the monastic institutions in Lithang County following anti-China protests in Lithang sparked off by Ronggye Adrak, a Tibetan nomad, during the annual horse-racing festival in August 2007.

In October 2007, during a visit of Chinese “work team officials” to Yonru Geyden Rabgayling monastery Jamyang refused to cooperate and expressed his support for Ronggye Adrak.

Jamyang was born in Yonru Sakhor Village, Lithang County. Jamyang visited India in 1995 and studied at Gaden Jangtse Monastery in South India until his return to Tibet in 2004. While returning to Tibet, he was detained at the Nepal-Tibet border and detained for three months.
