DHARAMSHALA, MAY 30: The Chinese authorities in Kardze County this week have released a Tibetan monk jailed in 2008 for taking in part in protests in Kardze town.

Gadruk Dorjee, a monk of Beri monastery in Kardze, was released on May 24, and arrived in his native to a rousing welcome by fellow villagers who waited for him with the Khata, traditional well-wishing scarves.

He was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, with two other monks, for allegedly setting on fire a bridge to stop Chinese soldiers and police from heading towards Beri monastery.

He was also accused of placing nail-studded wooden boards on the road to stop Chinese convoy heading towards his monastery.

He has already served six years of his eight year sentence.

131 Tibetans have protested against the Chinese government and it’s harsh policies that the Tibetans say are designed to eliminate the Tibetan identity.
