DHARAMSHALA, February 25: A Tibetan man has stabbed himself to death in Chamdo, Markham County on February 20, to avoid arrest by Chinese authorities, according to exile sources.
Tashi Tsering, 28, stabbed himself to death in front of Chinese police when they approached to arrest him for his alleged involvement in 2008 anti-China protest in the region.
Following protests against Chinese government in 2008, the authorities issued arrest warrants against Tsering on charges of ‘vandalism and causing social instability’ in the region. Tsering evaded arrest and had been on the run since then.
Meanwhile, Chinese authorities have detained twelve monks of Chamdo Khenpolung monastery on Feb. 15 for sharing pictures of the exiled Tibetan leader Dalai Lama and talking about Tibet on WeChat. After series of interrogation, the monks were released on Feb. 21 after appeals were made for their release.
