DHARAMSALA, September 23 – The Tibetan Parliament today passed a resolution mourning the death of a long time Tibet supporter and Indian legislator Mohan Singh. The Tibetan Parliament also expressed its condolences to the bereaved family members of Singh, who breathed his last yesterday in AIIMS after a prolonged battle with cancer. Singh, 68, was admitted to AIIMS on September 18.
Singh was the convener of the All India Parliamentary Forum on Tibet (AIPFT) which was founded in 1970 by M C Chagla. He played a key role in organizing a meeting between the Tibetan leader Dalai Lama and Indian lawmakers in the parliament annexe in 1990’s. The first World Parliamentarians Convention on Tibet (WPCT) was held in New Delhi in 1994 during Singh’s convenership of the AIPFT.
Singh visited Dharamsala in 2008 when Tibet reeled under tension after anti China protests swept the nation. “Any struggle for human rights preservation is a matter for the whole of humanity,” Singh had said.
Singh was Samajwadi Party general secretary and Rajya Sabha member.
Last rites will be performed at his ancestral village Jainagar in Deoria, UP.
Singh is survived by his wife Urmila and two daughters.
