DHARAMSHALA, AUGUST 14: Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay, the elected head of the Tibetan government in exile (official name: Central Tibetan Administration), today inaugurated the first ever Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) in the Tibetan community. Uma Ling Technical Solutions (ULTS), a new Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) venture aims to alleviate unemployment in the Tibetan community by creating employment opportunities for Tibetan youths.
The inauguration of the company began with a brief consecration ceremony by monks of Nechung Monastery and lighting of a butter lamp by Sangay who was accompanied by his cabinet colleagues.
Speaking at a modest function after the ribbon cutting ceremony, the 45 year old Tibetan Prime Minister said, “Through this project we hope that the unemployed, uneducated and educated youth who want to remain within the Tibetan community will get jobs, and in that sense Uma Ling Technical Solutions is the beginning of many projects and for other centres to replicate it not just in and around Dharamshala but in other Tibetan settlements as well.”
Sangay thanked the management of the ULTS for its initiative and wished them success in creating as many jobs as possible for the Tibetan youth living in India, Nepal and Bhutan.
“We are making all efforts possible to create employment opportunities by inviting professionals to train our youth. We get complaints about rising rate of unemployment within our communities but when we initiate projects there are very few people joining them,” Sangay regretted, citing an instance of meeting a carpentry teacher with only 2 students at the Tibetan government run vocational training facility in Bangalore.
“Uma Ling provides training for Tibetan youth to work in different processes, with new skills, in the dynamic IT sector while at the same time allowing them to gain the experience of working within a corporate structure,” said Deborah Akers, Project Coordinator for Uma Ling Technical Solutions. “The expected outcome is that more youth will be able to expand their skills and move into more innovative work areas.”
A total of 48 Tibetan youths, 35 for Web Mining and 13 for Voice processing have been shortlisted to work this new venture. The company is also planning to start medical transcription facility soon.
The 35 Tibetans who opted for Web Mining will undergo training for two weeks before starting their work from the company located near the Tibetan Children’s Village’s Handicraft Centre. The 13 Tibetans under Voice Processing will work in New Delhi to gain experience till January next year before starting operations from the company here.
Uma Ling was founded in March 2013 by Mr. Vinit Khanna and Mr. Narotam Sayal. The project is facilitated by the Tibetan government in exile’s department of finance.
