China kills a Tibetan man, four high lamas missing

DHARAMSHALA, May 3: Chinese authorities in Gonjo County, Kham have reportedly killed a Tibetan man and arrested four Tibetan abbots and trulkus whose whereabouts continues remain unknown since their arrest.

A Tibetan man was identified as Norgha who was beaten to death by Chinese officials for unknown reasons.

According to Dharamshala based Tibetan language news portal Tibet Times, in the end of March, Norgha, a Tibetan man from Marong region in Gonjo County was severely beaten to death by the Chinese security personnel and armed forces without explaining his crime.

The same news portal also reported of the missing of four high Tibetan monks after their arrest in July last year.

Abbot Pema Tashi of Dragnag Monastery was arrested in July last year and was taken to Chamdo, since then there has been no information of his well-being and whereabouts.

On September 2 which is celebrated as a Democracy Day in Tibetan community, Trulku Palden Wangyal from Cheogyal Monastery, Trulku Dorjee Choejor from Drodren Monastery and Abbot Sonam Khadro from Gyalwa Monastery were arrested and were also taken to Chamdo but the local Tibetans have no information on their condition and whereabouts.

The other detail information on a Tibetan man and monks are not known at the time of filing this report.

Since 2008, Chinese authorities have imposed several hard-line policies on Tibetans, resulting in Killings and torturing Tibetans, heavy sentencing and environmental destruction in Tibet areas.

It is also reported that in the last few years, Chinese authorities have forcefully confiscated the Tibetans land and field and forced the Tibetans to resettle.

A present situation in the Gonjo County is described as “under strict surveillance” with a large number of Chinese armed forces, security personnel and officials are present in the monastery in the region and have been conducting “Patriotic Re-education”.
