DHARAMSHALA, April 17: On the final day of its 10th General Body Meeting, the Tibetan Women’s Association elected its new executive members yesterday late in the evening.
Tashi Dolma, a former vice president of TWA (2000-2003) was unanimously elected as the president of the association while Samten Choedon was re-elected to the vice presidential post.
“I feel much honored to be elected as the president and I vow to do my best. We look forward to full cooperation from all of you – our regional executives and members,” Dolma said in her inaugural address to around 140 women grass root leaders from 33 regional chapters gathered at the meeting.
Nyima Lhamo, who formerly served as the program coordinator of the association was elected as the new General Secretary.
After six days of brainstorming on a 17-point agenda for the meeting, the Tibetan women body passed a list of resolutions touching upon political, social, and educational issues and empowerment initiatives of women in the exile Tibetan community as well as in Tibet.
“All resolutions derived from the broad agendas will serve as the action plan for TWA and its chapters for the next three years (2012-2015),” Dhardon Sharling, the outgoing spokesperson of TWA had said in a release at the start of the meeting.
Based on its past experience, the delegates have also decided to include a new regulation barring members of the exile Tibetan parliament from serving on the executive board of the organisation.
“We have seen and experienced that one person working both as a member of the parliament as well as in the executive board of TWA is ineffective and unsatisfactory on either side,” Dhardon said.
Others elected in the 11-member executive committee include Tsering Dolma, Tenzin Dickey, Tsering Wangmo, Tenzin Bhuti, Tenzin Tselha, Tsering Choedon, Tsering Dolma, and Pema Choedon.
