Dharamsala, February 28 – The Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama has denied reports in sections of the media, especially the Indian Express (Chandigarh) that the Tibetan leader discussed recent events concerning the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorjee with the US Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer, who visited the headquarters of the Tibetan government in exile on a two-day last week.
The Office of the Tibetan leader said it was “surprised” by the reports and made it clear that the report is “entirely speculative and baseless.”
“Neither side raised the issue at all,” said Chhime Rinzin Chhoekyapa, Secretary of the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. “At this time such reports are not helpful.”
Roemer held a closed-door meeting with the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama here Thursday.
The meeting, which took place at the official residence of the Tibetan leader at around 10 a.m, lasted for about an hour.
Talking to journalists after the meeting, Roemer described the meeting with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, the seat of Tibet’s Government in exile, as being “the first time in many years” by a US ambassador and said they held “very good discussion” about “several important issues”.
“I come here to this great place to meet with this very respected and holy man, and as a spiritual and religious leader in the world on a trail of many other high-level United States officials who have come up here to show their respect to His Holiness,” Roemer said.
Roemer had visited the north Indian hilltown base of the Tibetan government to inaugurate the new Reception Centre for Tibetan refugees funded partly by the US Embassy as part of its efforts to support the Tibetan refugees.
