KATHMANDU (Kyodo)- Nepalese authorities have freed all 24 Tibetans who had been jailed earlier this month for their involvement in banned anti-China protests, an official said.

Eighteen of the 24 protesters who were slapped with 90-day jail terms on March 12 were released Monday “after we felt that they no longer pose a security threat,” Kathmandu’s Chief Administrator Laxmi Dhakal said.

The six others were released earlier, either for health reasons or on the orders of the country’s apex court in response to a habeas corpus petition, Dhakal said.

The 24 Tibetans were jailed under the Public Security Act for their involvement in anti-China protests on March 10, the 51st anniversary of the Tibetan national uprising of 1959.
