Dharamsala July 30 – Works and exhibits of more than 50 international artists including Tibetans will be on display and auction in New York Saturday at an event commemorating 50 years of the Tibetan people’s nonviolent resistance to Chinese occupation.
Acclaimed Tibetan contemporary artist Tenzing Rigdol will collaborate with American counter-part Damion Silver for a live painting exhibition. Their work will be completed by the close of the event, and will be placed on auction.
“Tibet under Chinese rule is going through the darkest chapter in its history. But the spirit of Tibetan people continues to endure — and explode — in an endless stream of nonviolent resistance that runs through the Tibetan plateau and in the streets of exile. This is the spirit we celebrate through this art event, with Tibetan and non-Tibetan artists coming together to share the canvas of humanity and freedom,” said Sodhon, a Tibetan artist participating in the show.
In response to international demand for access to the artwork being sold at the event, Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) has added an online auction component to the inaugural art sale.
Bidding is open online from July 24 through 1PM (EST), Saturday, August 1st and will continue live at the gallery on that day from 5pm – 10pm. A “concierge” bidding service will also be available for online bidders.
All proceeds from the event will go to Students for a Free Tibet, New York based NGO that campaigns for the ‘Tibetan people’s fundamental right to freedom and independence’ through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action.
