53 people missing in Sichuan landslide

Dharamsala, July 23 – At least 53 people are feared missing in a landslide caused by heavy downpour early this morning in Kangding County, in Sichuan province, according to Chinese state run media. 97 people have also been evacuated from the area.

Local authorities said the missing people were road labourers on the number 211 provincial highway in Kangding County.

The landslide occurred at about 3 in the morning creating a lake about 3-thousand meters long and 50 meters wide, with about 3 million cubic meters of water, said Chinese media.

Rescuers are trying to deal with any dangers that the lake could create.
