Dharamsala, June 4 – Two monks have gone missing after a raid on Labrang Monastery on May 14 this year, Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) here reported.
Tsundue Gyatso 35, and Sonam Gyatso 38, both from Labrang County, were rearrested for the fourth time in connection with the last year’s multiple protests in Labrang. Their latest arrest came during a rushed raid at their quarters in Labrang monastery by the Chinese Public Security Bureau (PSB) and their whereabouts remain unknown.
The families and close relations of the duo who approached the local public security office to deliver food and clothing to the imprisoned and to acquire information about their wellbeing, were reportedly told by the Chinese officials that fresh interrogations are being carried on the two monks in the view of their involvement in the chain of protests carried in Labrang last year and that they will be released shortly. They were however denied information of the monks’ condition and location.
The two monks continue to face detention without any knowledge of their status to anyone.
Arrests and rearrests of Tibetans are carried out by the Chinese authorities in link to last year’s widespread protests across Tibet.
5 monks from Labrang who participated in various protests last year recently escaped to India after being underground for more than a year.
