Dharamshala, September 9 – 72 Tibetans were arrested by the police in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu earlier today. More than 100 Tibetan protesters gathered at the Visa section of the Chinese Embassy and staged a peaceful protest. The protesters remained mute displaying banners that called for freedom and human rights in Tibet.
The Tibetans lied down on the ground forming a human chain before they were whisked away by the police. The Tibetans are detained inside the premises of Maharaj Ganj Police Hospital. The police resorted to some minor use of force to keep the Tibetans away from the Chinese Embassy’s visa section. Witnesses say that the police were not as violent and brutal as they were during earlier arrests.
Nepal has witnessed one of the strongest and most frequent protests by Tibetans despite the fact that no major NGOs were involved in the organization and leadership of the protests. The Tibetans in Nepal have formed ‘Tibetan Volunteers Group’ following the March uprising in Tibet, and have been initiating demonstrations and protests voluntarily.
