Dharamsala, June 25: Tibetan Spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has been made an honorary citizen of Wroclaw, a big city in southwest Poland, IANS reported Wednesday.
According to the report, the announcement was made on Monday by the city’s president, Rafal Dutkiewicz.
In announcing the decision, Dutkiewicz lauded the Dalai Lama’s struggle for peace and independence for his people, the report said.
“The Dalai Lama has made tremendous efforts to keep the struggle going in face of a ruthless regime for the freedom of his people for five decades. Every lover of freedom and human rights should salute him. It is our privilege to confer upon him honorary citizenship of our city-Wroclaw,” the news service quoted the city president as saying.
According to the report, the Tibetan leader enjoys widespread support in Poland. The report also said many demonstrations had been held in the country in support of Tibet’s freedom since March in the wake of a crackdown by Chinese security forces in Tibet.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama is expected to go to Wroclaw next year to accept the honorary citizenship, according to the official website of the Tibetan Government-in-exile, based in Dharamsala.
Dharamsala, a small hill town in northern India, is also the exile seat of the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule over Tibet.
