The 14th Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies began its session this morning with a silent mourning for one minute in memory of the Tibetan martyrs who died in the past few days in protests against China. The members then discoursed on the ongoing demonstrations and protests against the Chinese regime in Tibet. The parliamentarians voiced their opinion in support of the Tibetan people in Tibet and in exile as well. It urged the United Nations to intervene before the brutal regime of China kills more innocents.
Condemning the repressive actions taken by the Chinese authorities, they expressed their concern at the continuing unrest in Tibet. The members said that now is the time to take action because ‘there is a danger of the Chinese government suppressing it like they did in the 1987 protests wherein we were forced into silence for almost two decades.’
The Assembly stood up in solidarity with the movement and called on the its 43 members to sit on a hunger strike. There were also calls for all the members to initiate the release of the marchers of the ‘Return March to Tibet’ currently held in judicial remand in a state-run Yatri Nivas near Dehra, some 53 kms from Dharamsala. They were unanimous in their call for an appeal to the Indian Government to allow the ‘Return March to Tibet’ and also to make an appeal to the world community to focus on the predicament of the Tibetan people and also to ensure that they get the inside story as accurately as possible.
The air in the parliament today was one of enthusiasm and fervor in their united opinion to stand with the Tibetan people.
