Ahmedabad, January 20: It was a full classroom at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad.

But that was because it was a rare lecture. The guest speaker was none other than the spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who spoke to students and teachers on ethical practices in business.

Sharing the dais with Raymond’s boss Vijaypat Singhania and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, the Dalai Lama said that money was important to every human being but there was no need to give up ethics for it.

“Even if you remain ethical in business or running your company, you will succeed. It’s a part of humanity. Whether you are a believer or not, ethics takes care also of your peace of mind and physical well being even, apart from business success. Ethics and success are not contradictory but complimentary each other,” said His Holiness, The Dalai Lama.

After the lecture, the Dalai Lama even had one to one discussions with some of the post-graduate students of the institute.

“What Dalai Lama has said, he actually emphasised on practicing ethics also in the form of secular at work places, an idea needs to be implemented in the corporates across,” said Vaibhav Bilimoriya, IIM student.

For these IIM graduates who are going to be tomorrow’s managers, the classroom session was quite different from the usual fare. It will be interesting to see how much of what they learnt from the Dalai Lala will actually be put into practice.
