Sir Edmund Hillary devoted much of his to life raising money to build schools, hospitals and roads in villages in the Himalayan mountains.

Not content to just to conquer Mt Everest, Hillary established The Himalayan Trust in 1960 to battle poverty in the mountain villages of Nepal.

Three hospitals, 13 health clinics and more than 30 schools have been built since 1960.

Sir Edmund himself was literally hands on in building schools, clinics and bridges that the trust commissioned.

The Himalayan Trust raised millions, forever changing the lives and landscape of Nepal and its people in the last 45 years.

The Trust has also built bridges and roads into the mountain villages, literally opening up the Sherpa to the world.

And Hillary made many loyal life-long friends along the way, his love for the mountains surpassed only by his love for its people.

Sherpa children adore the man whose work helped to give them an education.

“For us he’s a second Dalai Lama. He’s a God for us,” says a Sherpa child.

The schools, hospitals, roads and lives he has helped to build will all serve as memorials to his extraordinary life.
