New Tibetan Chief Representative for South India takes office

Bangalore Oct 6: Mr Tashi Wangdu took charge as the new Chief Representative of the Central Tibetan Administration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for South India, based in Bangalore City from out going Chief Representative Mr. Trinlay Gyatso, who is now appointed the new Chief Co-ordinator for Nepal. The handing over ceremony was attended by Representatives and Presidents of Co-operative Societies from five Tibetan Settlements and leaders of various Tibetan Associations and sweater sellers.

Mr Wangdu Tsering, Representative of Kollegal Settlement on behalf of the Department of Home, CTA witnessed the handing over.

Mr. Trinlay served in CTA for more than 20 years and as Chief Representative for South India since Jan 2005.

Newly appointed Chief Representative Mr Tashi Wangdu, who is also the Representative for Tibetan Dickey Larsoe Settlement, Bylakuppe, will be having a dual responsibilities in both the offices.

Mr Wangdu joined Central Tibetan Administration in 1995 as an accountant of then ATPD (Assembly of Tibetan People’s Deputies) Parliamentary Secretariat. In 1996 he was recruited as Under Secretary. His first appointment as gazette officer was in Bureau of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, New Delhi. In Jan 2001, he was transferred to The Office of Tibet, Pretoria, South Africa and served as Secretary till August 2006 after which he has been as the Representative of Dickey Larsoe Settlement.

The Office of the Chief Representative is the official agency of the Central Tibetan Administration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for Tibetans in Southern India. There are over more than 40,000 Tibetans living in five settlements in Karnataka State and about 3000 students studying in various colleges and institutions in the region. The region also has quite a number of Tibetans doing seasonal and other business in its different cities.

The main responsibilities of the Chief Representative, Bangalore is to liaise between the respective State Governments of India and the Tibetan community in south India. The office also acts as Coordinator between the CTA and the Tibetans in south India. The Office is also responsible for building awareness on Tibetan issues and to maintain conducive, safe and secure environment within Tibetan community.
