A meeting between the Melbourne Council and the Dalai Lama may no longer be possible.

Earlier this week the Melbourne Council voted to invite the Tibetan spiritual leader to town hall.

The move followed allegations Lord Mayor John So, who has links with the city’s Chinese business community, tried to stop councillors from meeting with the Tibetan spiritual leader.

The council denied any deliberate attempt was made to stop councillors meeting the Dalai Lama.

Despite the motion being supported by the majority of councillors, the organisers of the tour say they have not yet heard from the council.

Organiser of the tour, Dr Allan Molloy, says the Dalai Lama has a busy schedule and a meeting can no longer be guaranteed.

“The Dalai Lama doesn’t want to embarrass the council or the Lord Mayor, but things could be difficult,” he said.

“It’s like a wedding, when late RSVPs come in there is little you can do about it.”

The Dalai Lama arrives in Melbourne on June 8.
