MADISON, Wisconsin – The Dalai Lama said the Tibetan people would live in harmony with the Chinese if the ruling Communist Party would let them govern themselves.

The 71-year-old spiritual and political leader of Tibet brought his message of peace and understanding to a crowd of more than 12,000 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

He drew applause when he said he was optimistic the world could end terrorism and wars through compassion, forgiveness and kindness.

He also said he believed a solution over his disputed homeland was possible.

China claims to have ruled Tibet for centuries but the Tibetan people dispute that and are fighting for independence. China’s Communist Party rules the region with a heavy hand.

The speech marked the end of the Dalai Lama’s three-day visit to Madison, where he also met with politicians and blessed a new Buddhist temple.
