A major drive for Youth Activism and Youth Initiative for the Tibetan Freedom Struggle saw the birth of Tibetan Youth Congress’s 81st Chapter at Tamil Nadu’s Academic City of Trichy on the 11th of April.
A small number of 20 Tibetan students mostly from TCV Schools pursue different academic courses in the Trichy City. As the city had not been a regular center for Tibetan students’ academic pursuits and have only recently started to be enrolled in these prestigious colleges, except for few intellectuals; majority of the city residents are totally ignorant of the Tibetan issue and the struggle. However Trichy city; though slow and humble one compared to that of fast moving metropolis of Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore etc, has a major distinction of producing highly recognized academicsas the present President of India, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, Former President Dr K R Narayan and present Finance Minister Dr P Chidambaram etc. No doubt, the St Joseph College and Bishop Heber College of the city are currently a much sought-after prestigious academic institutes of the country and the Trichy students have chosen the City to pursue their academic goals simply for the above reason as well as perfect educational environment that the city is blessed with.
Therefore in order to contribute their bit for the Tibetan Cause and especially to promote awareness on Tibetan issue and the Tibetan freedom struggle, the students decided to organize themselves into an association and be a part of TYC for better guidance and coordination of their campaign in the city and else. So after major deliberation and consultation by the Central Executive Committee of TYC, RTYC Trichy was declared the 81st TYC Chapter and the inaugural ceremony held likewise on the 11th of this month, presided by the Centrex Representative, Vice President, Mr Lobsang Yeshi.
A day long inaugural ceremony began around 10.30 am, participated by the students including their recently elected executives and Mr Lobsang Yeshi. The ceremony began with the singing of Tibetan national anthem and a brief introduction by Mr Karma Tenzin, the president of RTYC Trichy,. Mr Karma while welcoming Mr Lobsang Yeshi, briefed on the developments leading to the eventual enrolment of the Trichy students into the Tibetan Youth Congress. Mr Karma also spoke about how the students came to the city to pursue their education and was shocked to learn that the city had not known Tibetan people and their freedom struggle despite being such a popular academic city. Hence the decision to do something about it through many activities and public relation drive to acquaint the residents of Tibetan issue and also seek support for the same. He expressed the sincere commitment of the student members to work hard for the Tibetan cause during their stay in the city. Mr Karma Tenzin further spoke of their first priority as an RTYC to launch a Tibet Festival in the city in collaboration with RTYC Bangalore and Chennai’s TSAM students.
Later Mr Yeshi read the statement of the Central Executive Committee of TYC on the inauguration of the RTYC Trichy and also spoke on the organizational Structure, Charter, Aims and Objectives and the political as well as social Campaigns carried out by TYC in the past 37 years. He also spoke about the commitments of the TYC members and the responsibilities that befall on each member. Later a ceremonial butter tea along with dresi (buttered rice and nuts combi) was served to all. Then Mr Yeshi spoke on various issues related to the Tibetan Freedom struggle, current deplorable situation in Tibet and the critical analysis of China’s power and the ground realities that threatens to collapse the regime anytime and the Tibetan people’s preparedness for the opportunity that history will provide them in the near future towards independence. This was followed by several hours of question and answer session.
A lunch break was followed by a college tour and briefing and an informal discussion and interaction with the students that last into the late evenings.
