Manu Bankul (Tripura), Jan 18: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has renewed his demand for the autonomy of Tibet.
“I am not seeking independence. I am actually helping the Chinese Government or the China in the promotion of stability and unity. So therefore, in reality, I am not anti-Chinese,” the Dalai Lama said.
The Tibetan leader, who was at Manu Bankul in Agartala to lay the foundation stone for a Buddhist school, further said that he was not at all against China, but his struggle was to establish autonomy in Tibet.
Commenting on Saddam Hussein’s recent hanging, the Dalai Lama said he was always opposed to the death penalty.
“That’s sad, very sad. I am always against death sentence. Amnesty International – they carry some movement worldwide to abolish death sentence, I am one of the signatory. So, I am always against death sentence,” he said.
Saddam was hanged after he was found guilty of crime against humanity in the killings of 148 Shias in Dujail village in 1982.
Saddam was hanged on December 30, as Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had demanded that the execution take place before the end of the year.
