Signs with messages such as “Free Tibet” and “Long Live the Dalai Lama” lined Austin’s Congress Avenue Sunday.
Students for a Free Tibet and other members of the Tibetan community marched down Congress and held a rally at City Hall as they protested almost 50 years of Chinese rule in Tibet.
“Our duty is to not forget our freedom and country. So, that’s why we have to keep struggling to gain our independence back. And also we are trying to gain our independence through peaceful means,” Tibetan Association of Austin President Tenzin Nyima said.
The association is also looking for tutors for Tibetan families in the Austin area. The group meets Tuesdays at 8 p.m. at The University of Texas’ Mezes Hall.
