Two Romanian Himalayan mountaineers say they saw Chinese soldiers shoot Tibetan civilians trying to reach Nepal, Romanian media said Wednesday.
Romania’s Realitatea television said a group of 80 Tibetan civilians were trying to reach a refugee camp in Nepal when they came under fire from Chinese troops, Bucharest Daily News reported.
The Romanian climbers, Alexandru Gavan and Sergiu Matei, told the television the civilians were killed on a remote Himalayan passage on Sept. 30.
They were men, women and children, barely wearing decent winter clothes. After an actual human hunt, eight of them did not live to see their dream fulfilled. They were hunted like rats, Gavan told Realitatea television.
An official of the Chinese Embassy in Bucharest told the television station he had no information about such an event, adding he does not believe Chinese soldiers kill innocent civilians.
Out of the group of 80 Tibetan refugees, 50 reached a camp in Nepal and the other 30 are missing, Belgrade’s Beta news agency said.
