Kathmandu,21st September-Tibetan Women Organization branch of Nepal organized an AIDS and Hepatitis awareness programme to over 200 women and several men at the Chonjor Hall in Kathmandu.
Dr. Kundu Yangzom La, a famous Tibetan gynecologist and obstetrician in Kathmandu and also the head of Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of Patan Hospital gave a slide-show talk programme on HIV and AIDS. She is one of the busy doctors of Kathmandu and works in several hospitals besides being the head of gynecology department in Patan Hospital, one of the biggest hospitals in Kathmandu Valley. She also runs a private clinic at Kunpondole. She said that she specialized in gynecology and obstetrics after an audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama where His Holiness told her to become a doctor for women as Tibetan women mostly prefer to show their problems to a lady doctor. If any young Tibetan girls want to become a doctor, she should have interest as well as study hard and if you do that then becoming doctor is not a problem.
During her practice for so many years, she said she have experienced many good and bad things in her life. There are some satisfied and some unsatisfied patients and sometimes if it is cases like cancer then it is frustrating because a person comes with hope and in some cases there is no hope but most times it is rewarding, so she is happy with her profession. She also said that Tibetan women take care of their health very well and don’t hesitate to spend money on their healthcare. Even though Tibetan women don’t spend money on good clothes, they try to find the best hospital for their health problem and she think it is very good. Her message to younger Tibetan women is that whatever you do you should do it with honesty and faith. When you sleep at night you should sleep happy without any doubt and that way you would be happy yourself and make others also happy.
Amji Choekyi La, a well known Tibetan herbal medicine doctor and famous for reading nerve gave a talk programme on Hepatitis. After the talk, she answered several questions from audiences and one was about treatment for AIDS and interestingly, she said that it is an achievement of Tibetan medicine that it have proven record of controlling AIDS virus in patients. It was carried out on 40 patients at a big hospital in USA and western doctors have accepted that Tibetan medicine can indeed control growth of AIDS virus in body. She also has very good personal experience of treating AIDS patients in Kalmyk Republic during one of her foreign visits and she was very happy and proud with the results of Tibetan medicine in controlling AIDS virus. However, she is not sure if Tibetan medicine can cure AIDS.
