The RANGZEN BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT was conceived by the Tibetan Students’ Association Madras TSAM and the Reddy family of Chennai three years ago to create a platform for young Tibetan refugee students in India not only to show case their basketball skills but also to promote their feeling of oneness and brotherhood to work together towards the cause of Tibet. Rangzen is a Tibetan word meaning ‘freedom’.
This year the tournament is being held at the J JAYALALITHA INDOOR BASKET BALL COMPLEX, TAMILNADU BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION, 82/1 Playground Street, Kilpauk Garden, Chennai 600 010 on September 21, 22 & 23rd 2006. Ten teams are participating this year from Bangalore, Mangalore, Baroda, Mysore, Ooty and Chennai. Of these, seven are boys team and three are girls. More teams though keen to participate are unable to because of College examinations.
The tournament is scheduled to be inaugurated on the 21st of September at 5 p.m.. Mr. L Balaji, popular Test Cricketer has consented to be the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony on Saturday the 23rd September 2006 at 5 p.m. and to present the Trophies to the winning teams. Traditional Tibetan dances and songs will be a part of the program.
Mrs. Aasha Reddy, a staunch supporter of the cause of Tibet has sponsored the Trophies and cash prize of Rs. 5000/- each for the winning teams (boys & girls), Rs. 3000/- each for the runners up and Rs. 500/- each for the best player of the Tournament.
