Censorship and freedom of expression in China

On Wednesday 23. August, Norwegian PEN will hold a seminar on censorship and freedom of expression in China in connection with the launching of the book “Silenced – China’s Great Wall of Censorship” by Øystein Alme from Voice of Tibet radio.

“Silenced”, written in English and published by the Swedish publishing house Amaryllis, documents the ongoing censorship taking place in China and Tibet and outlines the gulf between the real situation and China’s domestic and international responsibilities. The author will present the book and Mrs Chungdak Koren from Norwegian Tibet Committee will give short presentation of Tibetan writer Woeser in China and her Blog which has been recently closed down by Chinese authority. Panel of experts will then comment, panalist are:
Elin Sæther, research scholar in social geography, University of Oslo, currently writing a thesis about critical press in China.
Åshild Kolås, programme leader, International Peace Research Institute, Oslo
Torbjørn Færøvik, journalist, writer and China-expert
Moderator: Carl Morten Iversen, secretary general, Norwegian PEN
After a short break, the floor will be open for discussion.
Seminar will be held on Wednesday 23. August 10.00 – 12.30, at the Norwegian Human Rights House, Tordenbskjoldsgate 6 B, Oslo.
Norwegian Tibet Committee is part of the Human Right House and committees office is located there.
