Dharamshala – After winning the final round of elections with an overwhelming majority of nearly 91 percent, Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche will begin his second, successive term as the Kalon Tripa from 15 August.
Following the declaration of the election results on 1 July, the incumbent Kashag tended its resignation to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on 4 July, even though its term will expire only on 4 September.
According to a directive issued by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the incumbent Kashag should remain effective until the new Kalon Tripa is sworn in on 15 August.
All the Kalons nominated by the Kalon Tripa should be approved by the Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies, which will hold its next session only from 30 September.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama administrated the oath of office, when Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche became the first directly elected Kalon Tripa in 2001.
